I'm screwed...this is my phone...I'm having pc issues...I was sending an email...all of a sudden all the emails in my inbox disappeared...so I quickly closed outlook...found the folder of my inbox which looked like it was an ok size...and I saved a copy to my desktop...then I shut down..and when I went to restart...I see the windows screen...then it goes black and freezes....I've waited and waited...nothing happens...I tried restarting in different modes and the only thing that works is safe mode if I click escape setup (otherwise it freezes while checking a driver file...anyhow...I can get it to start in safe mode...I see this thing to go back in time....should I do that? I see some password protected pdf file called jillannupstairs.pdf wtf? Aarons at a show and I just texted him too..

Need more info. Which driver file does it freeze on? When you go into safe mode, ctrl-alt-del and write down the list of running processes. Post em here and I'll take a look at it.

It could be a boot-sector virus, but that's nothing more than a guess without more info.

Do I go back in time logged in as the admin or myself?

also, what anti-virus do you use? Do you have access to another computer nearby, aarons or something? I'd download "hijack this" and post a log on computercops. There's some REALLY helpful people there.

Restore points won't remove viruses, it'll only repair corrupted system files and settings. Login as admin, but this won't really help you if you've got a virus or hijacker.

I use symantec (norton)
If I choose safe mode and don't hit escape it freezes here:
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

Explorer.exe
Zcfgsvc.exe
Svhost.exe
Svhost.exe
Svhost.exe
Lsass.exe
Services.exe
Winlogon.exe
Csrss.exe
Smss.exe

did restore work?

I think either mup.sys or ndis.sys is corrupted on your computer. You can get a clean copy of the file off your recovery CD, and replace the corrupt one in safe mode.

A couple other ?'s:
Do you have a legit copy of windows, or is it cracked?
When is the most recent you updated windows?
Do you have sp-2 installed?

I had this same issue on the exact same computer 2 weeks ago.
I tried the windows repair and it did nothing. a couple more reboots and it booted regularly.

Okay, did a little more research:

Mup.sys is a part of XP's network security. There's a known problem with it breaking on sp-2 updates. Unfortunately, you may need to re-format, as this file ISN'T one you can just re-copy from another machine.

Also, this could be a hardware error. If it's hardware, even a re-format will not help.

For more info on this same problem you're having, check out this thread:

try this:

1) Boot off the XP CD and enter the "recovery console"
2) type "diasable mup" and hit enter (with out quotation marks)
3)reboot normaly and should work.

careful, some viruses bury themselves deeper and deeper every time you reboot. It doesn't sound like your problem is viral, but I don't run sp-2 so I'm not up to date with what viruses are affecting it.

Try browsing that thread I linked. There's over a dozen pages of people with the exact problem you're having.

I'm not sure what A347bug.sys means. Doesn't come up in google.

I've seen bug?sys before, and bug:sys. I think it's part of the system in windows that tags errors to send in bug reports to microsoft. A347 is probably a random number that gets assigned to the bug, when it created the log file for error reports.

SP-2 is the devil. People argue with me, but I lost my entire system within a few months of upgrading. Now I stay at sp-1, and just don't use IE or Outlook, and I've had no big problems since.

Besides, SP-2 searches for XP cracks, and shuts down systems when it finds them. Like with PACE protection in music software, I find almost always that intrusive copyright protection usually ends up causing more problems for legit users than pirates.

I'd think a virus may have fucked up windows but I'd imagine you guys are pretty smart with virus protection. There's always dozens of things to try with these types of problems. The last two PC's I fixed that had freezes in safe mode were due to HDD problems when I thought they were problems with malware/windows. So that's the first thing that comes to mind. I'd try doing a checkdisk to rule out that problem first. If you can get into windows you can do it there. Otherwise, if you can get into the recovery console I believe the command is chkdsk c:\ /r

And with the SP2 stuff... I was real cautious when installing for the first time. I tested it thoroughly on my machines and it seemed to be alright. The only time I run into problems with it is when I upgrade used and abused windows installations to it. There seems to be some problems then. But on fresh installs, slipstreams, and when I upgraded to sp2 from my clean drive images it seemed to be okey dokey. Didn't run into any of the problems I did with SP1.
