The ACTA would only be enforced in the event you pass border security or a stiuation like it, they have the authority to "randomly" search your laptop the same as they "randomly" search brown people at the airport. As an IT professional, I can say that "government spyware" is only something to potentially worry about (assuming the govt would take this absurd route to search your computer, which is a terrible, traceable way to do it) if you willfuly click on bogus links and download fake files on the internet. You are in total control of what your computer does and what information it broadcasts. There is no "government backdoor" to get to your data. Anybody that tells you otherwise is a conspiracy theorist and an ignorant computer user. Stay away from all major antivirus software (Norton). I haven't run antivirus software in 7 years. Just know how to go around the internet and how to spot fake files.
Yup. Well said. And as for the search at the checkpoint deal... if they take your computer by force, they can potentially look through the contents of your drive with not too much of a hassle. The only thing you can do if something like that happens is use encryption. I have whole-disk encryption software on my laptop. And before anybody says "BUT IT'S THE GOVERNMENT MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNN!!!! THEY CAN CRACK IT". Well maybe they can and maybe they can't... but they'd have to mail my drive off to some nerd in an office somewhere. But why would they do that if you're Joe Schmoe passing through the border checkpoint for your Mexico vacation? They're not going to go spend the time and money just to find your Metallica mp3s. And some rentacop with his portable xray machine and $5 sungalsses at border patrol isn't going to have the tools and knowhow available to crack that stuff. They'd have to be after you and have some sort of clue that the time they spend cracking your drive is going to pay off in the end with some huge conviction or something.
