I think you're missing the point. Look at your traditional black metal bands. Given, some of the bands are excellent musicians, but you have to keep in mind that "image" played an important role in blackmetal from Day 1. Most people are on the boat as image doesn't mean squat and it's all about the music - but I can assure you that black metal's image is just as important as the music and message. It's like saying Avril Levine is a true punk rocker. Blackmetal was known for Corpse paint, Satan, death, bitches, misanthropy, misogyny, and so on. Obviously the genre has evolved at an incredible rate. To me, the black metal "image" that bands portray is not what it used to be. Watain is one of the few bands that pulls it off sucessfully. but if you look at your average local band that wears corpse paint and goes all out, chances are they'll get laughed at. Shit's complex, and WIITR aren't your traditional black metal band, whether it be image or beliefs. That being said, it's about the music nowadays (for the most part) and they seem like an average band that doesn't deserve the hype. They aren't a BAD band, but an unorthodox black metalish band from the Pacific Northwest that has a hipster following.
